Create a Google Account using your own email address

Symptoms

You are being invited to access Google services, for instance to collaborate on a document or upload / download files securely with Google Drive. You cannot access those services without a Google account.

You may have a personal Gmail account but you have actually been invited through your work email address. At Workflow Doctor we will only share sensitive data with our clients through their work email address - data privacy, and any NDA we signed between Workflow Doctor Ltd and a client organisation would be undermined by allowing access using a personal email account.

Note: Workflow Doctor Ltd will reject an access request made through any non-work email address.

Resolution

It is not widely known that you can create a Google account using your own email address. This does not create a new Gmail account or any other email box, it's simply validating your identity through an existing email address.

The advice below is an extract from https://support.google.com/mail/answer/56256

To use an existing email address instead of a new Gmail address:

  1. Go to the Google Account Sign In page at https://accounts.google.com/signin
    • We recommend that you do this in an incognito window or in a different browser profile to avoid confusion with any other Google account you might use.
  2. Click Create account.
  3. From the drop down, select For my personal use.
  4. Enter your basic info.
  5. Click Use your email address.
  6. Enter your current email address.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Verify your email address with the code sent to your existing email.
  9. Click Verify.
